Vrooom ...the Ferrari sound

I read an interesting item today about a 1961 Ferrari Spyder that sold for $10,894,900 over the weekend -- apparently the highest price ever paid for a vintage car at auction. The story is at this Web site.

Anyway, it reminded me of the first time I saw a Ferrari in its "natural habitat" -- speeding on the track at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut (it's close to Millerton, NY). What gorgeous cars! I'm still a novice to the sports car world but now I can usually recognize when a Ferrari is near me by the sound of its engine. As a friend once told me, nothing else sounds like a Ferrari.

You can see lots of super cars this weekend at the Grand-Am GT Classic at Lime Rock -- I've attended the Memorial Day events at Lime Rock in past years and it's been loads of fun. LOTS of fancy cars that you can walk right up to and look at, and even a few well-known faces. ;-) Visit the Lime Rock Web site for the weekend schedule.

Dan Pietrafesa has an interesting article in today's Poughkeepsie Journal about a local businessman who is going to be driving in this weekend's races at Lime Rock. You can read it here.

Go Broadway: great choral music, Saturday & Sunday

The Rhinebeck Choral Club might be a little misnamed because its members come from all over our region. I've heard them perform several times and they put on a great show!

Their spring concert, A Tribute to Broadway, takes place at 8 p.m. today (May 17) at the Rhinebeck First Baptist Church and at 3 p.m. Sunday (May 18) at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie. The program will feature selections from 11 Broadway shows, including Wicked, The Fantasticks, Chicago, Spamalot, and Les Mis.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. More info is at www.rhinebeckchoralclub.org

Berkshire International Film Festival

Just a quick note to mention that the Berkshire International Film Festival is taking place this weekend, through Sunday, at the wonderfully restored Mahaiwe theater in Great Barrington, Massachusetts (just over the Columbia County, NY-line).

The 3rd Annual Berkshire International Film Festival brings the best in independent film, Q&As, discussions with filmmakers, and fun parties to the region with more than 50 feature films, documentaries and shorts from over 12 different countries as well as a selection of films from Berkshire student filmmakers.

At 2 pm Sunday there will be a special screening of Blade Runner with Doug Trumbull

Schedules and ticket info can be found at www.mahaiwe.org and www.biffma.com.

A day for green-thumbed moms ...

A press release I received from Clermont State Historic Site posed a great question: Why give Mom a bouquet of flowers, when you can surround her with an entire historic garden? Indeed, speaking as a mom (who is crazy about gardening) I know I’d rather have something I can look at – and cut flowers from – year after year. Not that I’d turn down a nice bouquet … too. ;-)

In the current issue of Hudson Valley Connoisseur magazine, we list a few great events taking place over Mother’s Day weekend that combine gardens and moms. There’s something special going on Sunday at Clermont State Historic Site, of course, and that’s a Mother’s Day Tour and Tea that will tell the story of the last matriarch of the Clermont estate, Alice Livingston, and the experiences she shared with her two daughters in the gardens at Clermont. Site horticulturalist Jane Lehmuller will lead participants on a leisurely walk through some of the seven different gardens on the estate, which is now owned by New York state. The tour will end with a tea service in the backyard of the 250-year-old mansion. Admission is $5 per person. Please call 518-537-4240 for reservations. Clermont is located off Route 9G near the northeastern Dutchess-Columbia county border.

Another event going on this weekend is the annual plant sale at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. I’ve attended this sale in the past and it has a very nice selection of plants in a lovely setting.

There is also a Mother’s Day plant sale being held by the Verplanck Garden Club at Stony Kill Farm, 79 Farmstead Lane in Wappingers Falls, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. More info is at this Web site.

Did I miss anything in the region? If you know of other Mother’s Day plant sales/garden events, please share them with me here. I haven’t yet decided how I am going to spend my day.
